We're exploring how augmented reality can improve upon the conventional desktop workspace.
App Details
Summary:
An augmented workstation that enables users to interact with text documents and images from their computers in virtual space. Utilities include virtual sticky notes and virtual text annotation.
Description:
The goal of this project is to leverage augmented reality to improve upon the desktop experience to create a work environment that can enable the user to seamlessly switch between the digital workspace and the physical workspace. Using AR, we can bring the experience out of the screen and make use of the surrounding space. In this way, the user will not feel that there is a boundary between what is in the screen and what is out of the screen.
As we all know, AR headsets are capable of providing an environment where the digital world is naturally blended into the physical world since it is able to sense the physical world with the sensors. However, due to the limitation of size, input methods, and computing power, it is not always the best device to use for works. Desktop, in many cases, is the reliable device that people work with. Obviously, the desktop does not have the functionality to interact with the physical world. Therefore, we want to create a bridge between the AR headset and the desktop that let both of them to have each other’s advantage. We want the user to be able to pull a piece of content out of the desktop into the AR headset or pull a piece of content in the real world into the desktop in a natural way with the aid of our project.
Furthermore, through creating a virtual workspace where users can interact with virtual documents, images, and sticky notes, we strive to make the workspace environment a more organized and entertaining experience. It can be very annoying to have multiple documents spread across the desk and having to go back and forth multiple tabs to view different documents. But through the ability to spread them out virtually into augmented reality, the environment is not only more organized but also more entertaining to interact in three dimensional space.
There’s also an eco-friendly angle to this project. To many people, there’s great value in having a tangible copy of something, whether it be their notes or documents. With an augmented workspace, we can offer a very close experience--users can place notes and documents in their workspace, arrange them how they like, and keep them there for as long as they like. As such, they might not feel the need to print off as many documents or hand write as many notes, meaning they would go through less paper.

Hardware Platform/Device:
Magic Leap One
Current Features:
- The user can send a file(image and text files for now) from their desktop to the Magic Leap's virtual workspace environment and then view the file in augmented reality.
- The user can interact with a whiteboard that is floating in the air by dragging it around and also drawing on it.
- The user can view text files clearly and annotate on top of the text file in augmented reality.
- The user can also draw on top of images.
- Having the windows be resizable to give users more degree of freedom to interact with images and text files in augmented space.
- Adding drawing tools such as a brush color and brush stroke picker, and an eraser tool.
- Letting the user be able to dynamically create whiteboards and plus sticky notes.
- Designing and developing a UI element tied to the Magic Leap controller that lets the user navigate through the different functionalities of the app with more ease and intuitively.
